With last weekend’s 21-12 victory over the Chargers the New England Patriots are now the first team in history to advance to the Super Bowl with an 18-0 undefeated record. This is an incredible feat in itself. They now have a chance to become the best team in football history if they defeat the New York Giants at Super Bowl XLII.
I predict a solid and clear victory for New England. I have been a fan of New England since the days of tight-end Russ Francis. I am a huge fan of Tom Brady. Any man who brings flowers to his girlfriend has my vote! However my personal sentiments have nothing to do with my prediction of victory for New England. I just feel that New England is the better team. They always find a way to win and they will do the same against New York at the Super Bowl. Tom Brady is perhaps the most adaptable quarterback in the history of the game and he will find a way to defeat The Giants.
However there are certain factors that concern me as my favorite team looks to make football history again. Those factors are intangibles that can overcome any degree of talent. They are momentum and excitement. We have all seen the factors come into play in every sport: boxing, football, golf, women’s soccer, equestrian events, and especially hockey.
Football is not an exact science. Intangibles must be considered. I could provide a litany of statistics why New England should win. On paper we all know they are a better team. New England has strong defense and offense. The Giants are a little weak on defense. I pick New England to win 38-10.
But wait a minute! Something is happening in New York. People are very excited about this Super Bowl. There is a sort of electricity in the air. I can feel it here in New Jersey, an hour away from the Apple.
New Yorkers are expecting something magical to happen. And this electricity and excitement, coupled with the momentum that New York has gained, may very well propel them to a Super Bowl victory. Recently they won games that they were not expected to win and this fact must be taken into consideration.
The Giants have gained strong momentum. They have the hopes and dreams of all of New York; which will give them a lot of confidence. They also have the dynamic energy of their New York fans, fans that truly want a Super Bowl team. This energy will be hard for any team to overcome. Even the awesome Patriots. We shall see!
Make no mistake about it. This game will be about intangibles and not just talent. It will be about momentum and be decided by the team who wants the victory the most.
