This one’s for Christine.
…her hair was tied up in a bun. she loosened it and a brown cascade fell. she placed her cellphone down on the wooden counter and said loudly, “no way mother that will never happen to me.” around her, people were streaming in and out of the coffee bar. she sat upright on the stool and crossed her legs. her eyes furrowed. she was annoyed. why did mother have to say such things? she thought. i’ll get old and grey one day, but not now. now i get to live life and do as i please. hmph. the glass door opened next to her and her plaid skirt fluttered in the wind. it was eugene. it was a welcoming sight and she flashed a crooked smile. come give me a kiss lover, she said. she leaned over and kissed him. it was a deep kiss … a very deep kiss … she gradually became aware of the outside world and her face turned crimson red when she noticed bystanders staring at them. she removed her lips from his and wiped her mouth with the back of her palm. haven’t people ever seen someone kiss before, she thought. what are they gawking at? … jesus you think people could mind their own business …vagrant words seem to come out of nowhere. “Christine,” a voice said nebulously … “Christine,” again the voice became more audible… “CHRISTINE!” this shook her out of her stupor and her eyes finally came to rest upon eugene. he was sharply dressed … a black suit and a silk tie.
“i’m sorry i raised my voice,” eugene said, “but you seemed to be spacing out.”
“it’s all right lover,” she said reassuringly. “was anything else raised?” she said gleefully. eugene’s face turned red. he stammered a few incoherent words but nothing came out.
“oh poor boy … at a loss for words?” she said wickedly.
“no,” he said shyly … “it’s just inappropriate conversation in a coffee bar.”
“yes really…come on let’s get out of here…i’m starting to feel uncomfortable.”
“just a minute….let me powder my nose.” she took out her paraphernalia, did some sharp strokes to her face, and returned her items in her purse.
“i’m done” she said confidently. “let’s go.” she took his arm and they exited the coffee bar. it was cold and grey outside … not really rainy weather but drab.
“should we go back to your place or mine?” she said.
“yours,” he responded . “i like the way your apartment smells. it’s sweet over at your place.”
“o.k.” she said. “where is your car?
“in the back of the coffee shop …”
they clenched hands and walked towards the back of the alley. their heels crunching the gravel as they walked towards the car. the air was biting and they both shivered at the wind. they finally arrived at the car. they got in. eugene slid his key into the ignition and they sped away.
“stop driving so fast,” christine said fearfully.
“sorry,” eugene said apologetically. “i’m just really excited.”
“we’ll we have plenty of time,” christine said reassuringly. “make a left at the next corner.”
christine was nervous. she thought about what her mom said. she thought about aging and it didn’t appeal to her. what if her mom was right? what if she didn’t have all the time in the world? should she look for someone more successful than eugene. should she shack up with someone who was wealthy while she still had her looks? she was doubtful. she glanced towards eugene and noticed his facial features … he was smiling. hmph she thought. is he gonna get it tonight! they arrived at her apartment and raced in.
it was warm inside…the living room was a glow from the candles strewn across the coffee table. “you know it’s dangerous to have candles burning when you’re not home,” eugene said deploringly.
“i like to live dangerously,” christine said with a grin. “come here.”
their lips met. hot fluid passed between them and the world tumbled. eugene gently removed her blouse and undid her skirt. her body was warm and soft. he kissed the nape of her neck and made a gentle bite. “mmmmmm,” christine moaned. “let’s go to the bedroom.”
she led the way to the bedroom completely nude. eugene followed her, stumbling every now and then while removing articles of his clothing. he braced himself against the brass banister in the hallway and took off his shoes and socks. his bare feet curled on the carpet.
“well?” christine said with a smile, “what are you waiting for?”
they both plunged onto the bed … silk sheets entwined them … eugene felt christine’s creamy white thigh brush up against his own. he planted minute kisses on her pale body and slid his hands against the arch of her back. beads of sweat trickled down their faces. her hair … her hair was so inviting … silky and smooth … it tumbled past his own. eugene fingered her hair appraisingly … but then something went wrong … her once beautiful hair … began to dim. it slowly started to turn from a dark brown to a grayish white. he was appalled by this.
“what’s the matter?” christine said noticing eugene’s expression.
“your hair it’s starting to go white!” eugene exclaimed.
“oh my god..you’re right” christine said looking at her hair … “it is going white.”
eugene looked aghast. he stared at her face … not only was her hair turning white but her once beautiful face was starting to wrinkle … the fine features on her face slowly started to mold. “you’re hair isn’t only turning white … your face is starting to wrinkle.”
“what!” christine exclaimed. “give me a mirror quick”
eugene shook his head in disbelief.. “I, uh” eugene stammered. “i have to go … i’ve got stuff to do.”
“no wait don’t go … you can’t leave me like this…”
eugene scurried out of the bed room, found his clothes, put them on, and headed towards the door. he heard an all consuming shriek coming from the bedroom as he opened the door. the shriek turned into a scream which reverberated against the walls and the last thing eugene noticed was a despairing wailing sound coming from the bedroom.
