Have you ever wondered what factors cause a woman to look aged? We can look at a photograph of a woman and label her as either young or old in appearance. But it might not be easy for us to articulate why.
A study by Bahman Guyuron (of the Cleveland Clinic) examined the various factors that cause women to look aged. In case you are interested, this study was published in the April 2009 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
The main factor that causes women to appear old: A thin face is the lead culprit, according to the research. Being slender causes a loss of volume in the face. But this holds true only for women over forty.
The reasoning: The loss of facial volume creates jowls and makes wrinkles develop. The older we get, the more the face gets depleted.
This effect is even more profound when women under forty gains weight. This, of course, obscures the inherent facial definition. So when they lose weight after forty, aging is enhanced and accelerated.
Why facial weight gain in women over forty may be a good thing: In older women, having a little weight on board makes the face look a little younger. In the late twenties and early thirties, a woman’s facial shape is a heart or inverted triangle but with age, it becomes a square or an upright rectangle. This of course is not due to bone structure changes, but the effect of gravity on facial mass.
To keep that younger looking shape, many women opt for a procedure to fill out the face with injections of Restylane, Juvederm, or a similar product.
Another option, would also be to eat more.
Other factors that make women look old: Guyuron’s study looked at nearly 200 pairs of identical twins over the course of two years. Since the twins’ genetic makeup was the same, researchers were able to attribute the differences in how old they looked to external factors.
In addition to thinness, the study found these additional causes are also to blame.
- Heavy drinking
- Sun exposure
To look your best:
- Quit smoking/drinking heavily
- Get a job working indoors
- See the marriage counselor
- Don’t worry/be happy
- Best of all have a hot chocolate soufflé every now and then, especially on those birthdays after thirty-nine
