Soda, or as some people call it pop, is everywhere. In television advertising, in the stores, in the school vending machines. There’s no wonder why the average teen consumes about 2-3 cans of it in an average day.
From far away, these carbonated beverages seem practically innocent. Packaged in trendy, modern containers and selling cheaper than water bottles they seem like a good fit to satisfy drinking needs, but it comes at a price.
With sodas being easily accessible and cheap, here’s why you should invest in something more, healthy for your wellbeing.
Soda contributes to Obesity.
The average can of soda contains about 150 calories. With Americas drinking about an average of 2-3 cans of soda a day, that equates to over 300 calories a day, a gain of calories not found to be compensated to at mealtimes. This gain of calories, which can easily exceed 2000 a week can pack on the pounds faster than you know it. And with obesity climbing an all time high it would be a good thing to stop your consumption.
Soda dissolves tooth enamel.
The sugar in soda does more than add extra calories, it rots our teeth. With up to 50 grams of sugar in a can of soda and phosphoric acid it easily dissolves our tooth enamel. Furthering our susceptibility to cavity’s and other dental diseases.
Soda leaches calcium from your body.
Soda contains high levels of phosphates, a chemical known for can easily leach the calcium from your bones. The relationship between this is so strong that soda consumption is strongly linked to osteoporosis, a condition marked by an increase risk of bone fracture and reduced bone mineral density.
Excessive soda consumption linked to Muscle Problems/Hypokalemia.
A condition in which the concentration of potassium in the blood is too low is linked to extreme soda consumption: 4–10 Liters a day. This condition causes muscle problems such as muscle weakness, cramps and involuntary contraction of muscles (medically referred to as tetany). If you experience any of theses problems, it would be my advice to go and see a doctor. The condition can be treated with a potassium-rich diet and or oral/I.V. potassium depending on the severity of the symptoms.
Soda Lowers Immune Function.
As if we didn’t already need another reason to reduce our soda consumption. Research shows that the amount of sugar in a can of soda can reduce your immune function by around 80% for a couple of hours, and with a suppression like that, you wouldn’t reallywant to be in crowded place like a mall or an airport – espically with sicknesses like the swine flu infecting everyone.
With all these reasons to drop your soda habit, you would be crazy not to dump the sugar solution from your soda cans.
