While a little stress can be good for you, too much stress can really cause harm to your body. Stress is often called the silent killer because you can’t see it or touch it. Instead, we notice our health declining, and our mental energy draining away. Stress can actually speed up your aging process.
What can stress do to your body?
Stress makes you more likely to catch colds, flus, and other illnesses, because it compromises your immune system. It can cause your skin to wrinkle, and your hair to turn grey at a faster rate than it normally would do so. This can lead many people to desperately seek out products designed to assist with anti-aging. Stress can raise your blood pressure, cause you to gain weight, and increase the chances that you will develop several diseases. It can cause headaches, back pain, tense muscles, and even make you grind your teeth.
How to deal with stress
One of the most important lessons we can learn is how to effectively deal with stress. Here are some ideas you can try.
Meditation is an excellent for anti-aging as well as stress relief. Practicing meditation can lower your blood pressure, strengthens your immune system, improve your mental processes, and even promote faster healing.
Taking a walk is a great way to release stress. It only takes twenty or thirty minutes of walking for your to experience the benefits of it. You can do this on your lunch break, for quick relief from work stress! Going outside and getting some fresh air can reduce mental strain.
Get some exercise a few times a week. Working up a sweat is a great way to release some stress! Exercise is also an effective anti-aging tool, because it helps you lose weight, increases your metabolism, and tones your body. You’ll feel better!
If you have the opportunity, take a nap. You only need about twenty or thirty minutes for a nap to be effective. Find a nice, dark, quiet room, and get some must needed rest. This is especially beneficial if the source of your stress has been causing you to be unable to sleep well at night.
Find someone to talk to about the things that are causing you to feel stress. Just having a good friend or favorite family member listen to you vent without passing judgment on you can give you some instant relief. Or, you can seek out a good therapist or counselor to speak with if your causes of stress are more serious, or too personal to share with someone who is in your life.
Learn how to say no. If you are feeling stressed because your workload is too high, or because you have too many responsibilities, you need to understand that it is healthier to say no when you are asked to take on even more. Realize that you cannot take care of anyone else if you are unable to properly care for yourself.
