On August 16, 2009 my husband and I handed our middle son, Joshua over to the United States Marine Corps. He had just graduated high school two months prior. He was loaded on a bus headed for Parris Island. It was three months of boot camp. There would be no phone calls, e-mails, or Skype.
Letters were the only form of communication allowed. I will never forget saying good-bye to my “little” boy. He had come to a decision on his own to serve his country. I hugged him too tight, and thought my heart would stop beating then and there. It seemed life would never be okay for me again.
As parents, it is the letting go that is the hardest. To let our chicks go out on their own. You hope the values that you taught, will carry them through and hopefully, make their load easier. And then, all you can do is pray. It has been a year, and while difficult with his absence, life is still beautiful.
