The end of the year is a great time to take a few minutes to sort through all of those lipsticks, eye shadows, creams, and powders that have accumulated in your makeup drawer. Not only does outdated makeup not function properly, but some can even be harmful if used past its expiration date. Here are some guidelines on what to keep and what to throw away.
Lipstick and Lip Liners—Most lipsticks will last from one to two years, sometimes even a little bit longer. It’s easy to tell when it’s time to throw them away; they have a distinct “spoiled” aroma and have a dried consistency.
Eye Shadow and Eyeliners—These products will last around three years.
Foundation—Oil-based foundations last somewhat longer than water-based products. Discard your oil-based foundation after eighteen months, and your water-based one after twelve months.
Concealer—Similar to foundation, concealer will last about one year.
Mascara—The most perishable item in your makeup drawer, mascara is past its prime after about four months.
Nail Polish—All those pretty colors only last about one year, at the most.
Brushes and Sponges—Wash brushes every two to three months and they will last indefinitely. Discard makeup sponges monthly.
Face Powder—Loose face powder will last a relatively long time, around two years.
Is your drawer all clean and organized now? What a good excuse to ask Santa for new supplies.
