How to make yourself happy every day is not easily answered because authentic happiness is a personal choice and it comes from within. We all have events cascading through our lives but it’s how we choose to deal with life’s events that dictate how happy and fulfilled we feel. A good rule of thumb is to remember feelings follow actions and positive actions make for positive feelings.
Here are seven (7) easy tips that with a little focus, will remind us we can be genuinely happy and feel good each day. Work these into your daily routine and you will soon forget you felt any other way.
Tip #1 – Do something good for another person. Doing something good for someone else has the two-fold benefit of making you feel good and uplifting the spirit of the person you’ve helped.
Tip #2 – Smile. First impressions occur within the first 3 seconds of meeting someone. To feel your best when making that first impression, be sure to smile. This sets the tone for your interaction with someone else. Research also suggests that smiling may improve your mood, slash stress, boost your immune system and lower blood pressure.
Tip #3 – Respect other people and don’t judge. It’s not always easy to accept the differences in other people if we see something we don’t like, don’t understand or it goes against our personal values. This can be a source of irritation for us. However, trying to better understand the people around you and what may be behind the way they act will help you get rid of those negative feelings.
Tip #4 – Use positive words. Learn to be positive with your words whether it’s for yourself or for others you’re speaking with. This will keep you from hurting or angering someone else and you will save yourself the later regret from having said them. Take a second to think about how you would feel if those words were said to you.
Tip #5 – Don’t let anything ruin your entire day. If you are faced with a difficult situation at work, don’t dwell on it and have it ruin your day. Find ways to fix it. If some people make you mad, win the battle by not giving in to anger and move past it. Realize those things that are beyond your immediate control and let them go.
Tip #6 – Allow yourself to have a good laugh. Learning how to be happy can be as simple as laughing out loud. Share a funny story or good joke with your friends or family. Go out with friends who talk about hobbies and travels and share light, uplifting stories and not those who speak negatively about other situations or people.
Tip #7 – Surround yourself with positive people.Happy people are infectious, negative people are draining. Stay away from people that have negative influences in your life and from things that you know will make you unhappy.
The first step in being happy is to make that conscious effort to do it. Wake up each morning and say “I’m going to be happy today”!It’s not only uplifting; it leads to more creativity, better relationships and more productivity at work. It also positively influences the people around you as well as gives you the added benefit of better health, fewer cardiac problems, less risk of cancer and a stronger immune system!
