It was a lifetime ago that you held me in your arms
We hushed each other in the dark
Your lips were soft and urgent
Our bodies were firm and solid with youth.
The night was warm, a breeze blew across our skin
We were giddy with the discovery of each other.
It was a lifetime we had shared to that point
Yet we were just knowing each other for the first time.
That knowing, the comfort of your embrace, the soft
kisses on my neck
Still linger when I think of you.
The darkness surrounded us, but we were as light as air
We gave ourselves freely, eagerly
We were as afraid, but adventurous as children.
Not hurried, not desperate, but warm and comforting
A friendship deepened, solidified, consumated.
We are softer now, separated by years, but not miles
You stay in my mind, my heart, my very being.
How I wonder what that lifetime may have become.
