When I was growing up, each year my mom would greet the Fireman's Fund representative at the door for donations and then tack up a new sticker on the window. As a ritual, once a year we would go through our wardrobe to see what no longer fit, to drop off clothes to the Salvation Army. I remember mom wrestling with her thoughts about what she wanted to save, and what to give away for the AM Vets pick-up truck coming on certain weekends.
Volunteering is something I stumbled upon and would recommend to everyone. Donating your time will give you a sense of true involvement in your community and has a way of keeping everyone abreast to happenings in a particular area of interest. Don't get me wrong, I think mom donating items and money was a wonderful act of kindness and generosity in those days. I'm just saying if anyone has a little time, volunteering can be a very rewarding experience also, for patriotic, spiritual, and humanitarian reasons.
Years ago I owned a small commercial cleaning company, and I ran across a campground for Cerebral Palsy/ Muscular Dystrophy needing help. It was not a big deal, a few weekends each summer, I would clean the quarters where campers and volunteer camp counselors would stay.I could tell the director was truly relieved and thankful when I was finished. I continued doing this small thing to help out for the next few years, and I truly felt I got more out of the experience than they did.
I make a choice every year to pick out a worthy cause I feel I should in some way contribute to. Although I am a local columnist, I write about many charities each year, I also feel the need to actively be involved. This year, I have chosen to actively become involved with volunteering in two charities of my choice, the St. Vincent Depaul & Urban Art Retreat's Fashion for Charity event, and the Dupage County Health Departments Golf event.
It is true, that some events and fundraisers could not take place without volunteers. It really is easier than you think, once you figure out your passion and call or email to help out the cause of your choice. After you donate some time and or talent, for whatever reason (patriotic, spiritual, or humanitarian), you surely won't regret you did. We have a greatmeet-up called ChicagoFun Volunteers that connects with your individual iinterests and causes.
