But you deserve to suffer if you are a murderer, a thief, a crook or a busybody (1 Peter 4:15 CEV)
I was waiting for my husband in the doctor's office, bored out of my mind. I'd forgotten to bring my knitting along and the only magazine in the waiting room was a tabloid.
I opened the magazine and browsed through the features and photos. I saw stars without makeup, clearly caught in photographs unaware. I read gossip regarding a big movie star's sexuality, absorbed rumours about an A-List couple's messy divorce, scanned stories about Hollywood stars "gone bad"-in debt, overweight, or in trouble with the law.
These pictures and stories were bad enough but the most disturbing thing I saw was the bold headline "We'll pay big for your celebrity gossip!" I couldn't help wondering how many stars were hurt by these stories and how many people cashed in selling photos and secrets to tabloids.
I laid the magazine back on the table, feeling a bit downhearted and not enriched in any way. I stared out the window and made a mental note to never forget my knitting bag again.
Psst…Notice how the scripture above places busybodies in the same crowd as murderers and thieves? I think we all need to be more careful with our words and our reading choices. The devil will try to lure us in with the promise of big bucks or juicy secrets but we must resist the urge to gossip for it's clearly a sin the Lord does not approve of.
