Grandparents Times Three
Let me give you a little background information. We have three beautiful daughters, Elishia 28, Brittany 26 and Dominique 24. Elishia and Tito were married April 2004. Brittany, age 26, married Ben last April, 2nd. 2011 and our youngest, Dominique, was married to Justin on May 7th 2011. That in itself was a lot to handle with two weddings only a month apart. We assumed they would wait a couple of years to start their families. WRONG!!! All three of our girls have always been extremely close as sisters. My oldest decided on the University of North Florida as her college choice, and the other two followed in her footsteps. They all met their husbands while going to school and after graduation from college they all settled in near their alma mater in Jacksonville, FL.
Early in February of this year, when two of our daughters and their husbands were visiting from Jacksonville and we were all sitting down for our Sunday dinner when our oldest daughter, Elishia, asked if we wanted to play a game. She held out her clutched hands and said pick one. When we did she opened the one we picked we saw the words “I’m pregnant” written in her palm. We screamed with joy! She had been married for 8 years and we had been “patiently” waiting for a grandchild ever since. She was not very far along with her pregnancy, and she wanted to wait a while yet to go public with the information, so we agreed to keep mum until she decided the time was right. This was really difficult for us, especially when our dear friends at a dinner party announced two weeks later that they would become first time grandparents in August. My husband and I just looked at each other and bit our lips. We were bursting at the seams to share our joy, but had to hold our tongues until the kids gave us the go ahead.
At the end of February we visited the girls in Jacksonville, still excited about being grandparents at last. Dominique and Justin totally surprised us when they asked us what we thought of Dominique’s new tattoo. “What tattoo?” we said in unison. She pulled up her shirt and revealed the words, “We’re Pregnant” written on her belly. We were speechless! They had not been planning on starting a family quite yet, and they were quite surprised themselves. Later that evening, Brittany and Ben joined us at Elishia’s house and immediately read us a riddle that announced that they also were pregnant. Needless to say we were speechless again!! For many years we had been hoping for grandchildren and now we will have three within 6 weeks!
Elishia’s baby is due Sept 25th, one day after her step-dad’s birthday. She and her husband decided that they did not want to find out the gender, so it will be a surprise. Brittany is due on Oct. 30th, which is her birthday and she is having a little boy. Dominique is due on Nov. 2nd which is her husband, Justin’s, birthday and they are having a girl.
It has been an interesting journey – watching all three tummies growing together, comparing morning sickness symptoms and the ever dreaded weight gain. Also even though all three daughters are close in age, their pregnancy cravings are all unique. Elishia craved potatoes and bread, Dominique was content eating a huge jar of pickles a day, and Brittany insisted on getting an OK from her doctor to eat a bowl of ice cream every night. For the girls it has truly been a blessing to share this amazing journey with each other. Fittingly, Elishia, is due first, so her siblings are counting on her to school them on the do’s and don’ts of this new adventure. My husband and I are eagerly waiting for the phone call saying she is in labor to jump in the car and head to Jacksonville. I’m sure the normal two hour trip will be made in less than an hour!! With Brittany’s and Dominique’s due dates only two days apart we can imagine them delivering on the same day and we’ll be running back and forth from the birthing center, where Dominique is delivering, to the hospital that Brittany has chosen. It will be a very hectic, wonderful and interesting time, to say the least.
We are looking forward to babysitting, though I’m going to have to relearn my diaper changing skills – and speed it up to accommodate all three babies. Adding three grandchildren to our family all at once has posed some unique challenges. How would we fit three cribs in our house when all 3 new families visited us in Orlando? Last year our family grew quickly when we added two new sons-In-law. Now, with the addition of three babies, suddenly we find our once roomy house is getting a little crowded – in the most positive way imaginable!
This has been an exciting journey for all of us since the first baby announcement and the excitement has increased times three since then. And we have only just begun!! These three little baby cousins will have instant family to share their life adventures. One cannot help but marvel at the prospect of their lives together.
