There is a man who sits in a wheel-chair on the river walkway path, ~just where it meets with the Natchez Steamboat entrance.Or more importantly,for his business venture, ~it is also wherethe patrons of the boat ~ EXIT…
I met him through the good graces of a recent acquaintance, who is a drummer. I know 'you Guys' are asking, "you have so many friends who are drummers, which one is this?" ~~No, this was not a friend, ~only an acquaintance, but one with whom I had planned to walk up toward Decatur.. We started to walk and talk, until I found myself talking to 'no one'. ~~And looking back, I could see them in conversation. The 'walking drummer' was listening intently to the 'wheelchair-bound drummer'..
I was introduced as, 'Delores'; ~then the excited chatter of the 'seated man' had me clearly getting/hearing what seemed to beeither SYMBOL OR CYMBAL,as to what his name was.. Which is the name I now consider to be his.
~~Eventually, I had to go to my dictionary to refresh the exact meaning of the two words:
~~The first is: 'something standing for something else..
~~~The next is: either: 'the hollow of a vessel' or 'a brass plate to be struck'..
All of which set me to thinking.. There he was, 'asking for help' ~ I hesitate to say 'begging'~ for he sat there, with an over-turned bucket in his lap, that he clanged upon with a bit of a stick, loudly chanting words, ~~ I couldn't understand… And if people passing by~left a bit of money, ~well, so be it..Begging or Entertainment ??
AND, is he a 'symbol' or 'cymbal' ? or BOTH?
I stood aside, watching My Acquaintance exchange soft words of encouragement; then place a small sum to the side of that 'pretend drum', as he turned to join me.
While we walked along, he shared what little he knew of my 'Symbol/Cymbal' man.. "Eventually friends will come along", said he, "to wheel him to wherever home is." However, onone rainy nightwhen the drummer telling me this story was carrying a lot of stuff to his own home,no one had arrived to wheel the 'seated drummer' away!So you guessed it! ~~My Acquaintance took his own baggage home, grabbed whatever he thought might be needed,~And went back to The River!!
The pathway was empty, ~friends must have wheeled off the' seated drummer'! ~I asked my 'walking drummer', 'What was he going to do if Sym/Cym was still waiting?' "I didn't really know", said he,
"but I couldn't just leave him there, in the pouring rain!!"
