Emmys 2011: Our Picks for Best and Worst Looks of the Night
"Modern Family" may have swooped up all the statues, but we all know the real winners of the Emmys are determined on the red carpet. Take a look at our picks for the best dressed, near misses, and biggest fashion letdowns of the night.
Kate Winslet: Best Dressed
In a sea of red, the regal Ms. Winslet stood out in a simple, stunning cap-sleeve gown by Elie Saab.
Although he’s treading dangerously close to waiter-uniform territory, Joel McHale is making the powder blue jacket thing work. He’s funny and tall; he can kind of do whatever he wants, fashionwise, can’t he?
We absolutely love the beadwork and lines of this dress, and we were ready to declare you the fashion champion, Gwenie, hands down. Until we lowered our eyes and saw your bare midriff begging us for an extra swath of fabric.
Minka’s Kelly’s periwinkle Dior gown had a lot going for it, and the new Charlie’s Angel looks stunning as always, but the black stripe around her waist and the overall busyness of it prevents us from committing fully.
Sure, this dress looks a little like Heidi had an unfortunate run-in with some mean coral reef on her way to the show, but the color is stunning on Heidi’s perfectly tanned skin, and her playful style was a breath of fresh air on the relatively tame red carpet. However, we’re pretty sure Michael Kors would tell her to lose the earrings.
Space-suit-meets-sister-wife-chic? There’s really nothing redeeming about this dress. We’re guessing Amy was too busy being the funniest lady on TV (despite her loss last night) and becoming a new mom to spend too much time picking out a gown.
When just about everyone in Hollywood decided to don the same vibrant red hue, it’s hard not to make comparisons. This one is by far the snooziest of the parade of red snooze-fests. Also is it just us, or does this dress have a distinctive “David’s-Bridal-bridesmaid dress” feel?
We’ve seen Katie look more chic and put-together tooling around town with her equally fashionable daughter than she did for her walk down the red carpet. Her messy up-do didn’t help the fact that the neckline of the Calvin Klein dress seemed reminiscent of a muscle tee, while the rest of it didn’t do anything for Katie’s svelte figure.
This dress can’t decide what it wants to be. A relaxed, spaghetti-strap top with a weird draped back meets a structured, mermaid skirt with satin stripes, oh, and there’s a belt: our eyes just can’t process it all.
