Each New York Fashion Week, I watch dozens of shows with dozens of out-there hair and makeup looks marching down the runway. As beauty editors, we’re supposed to report and interpret these trends for the masses, but be honest: How many of you actually want to wear red eye shadow or black lipstick? I thought so.
This NYFW was different, though. There were looks that even a simple girl from Minneapolis could love. These are the beauty trends you’ll to look forward to this fall—or start embracing now.
Fresh-Faced at Michael Kors
Rosy cheeks, dewy skin, shimmery eyes? Yes please. This is the girl next door we all want to be. Apply your favorite red lipstick to both cheeks as a blush (blend well) and your lips (blot for a more natural look). For an après ski flush, use the same tint or stain to color both lips and cheeks.
Gunmetal Nails at Zero + Maria Cornejo
Swap out your sparkly silver and vampy varnishes for this universally flattering, edgy shade. Worn on fingers and/or toes, a deep graphite gray with a hint of shimmer acts as an accessory and goes with everything. Pictured: Zoya Nail Polish in Freja.
Modern Matte at L’Wren Scott
My favorite way to wear a smoky eye is paired with luminous skin and pale matte lips. It’s fresh and exotic, not dark and heavy. For the eyes, try navy blue eyeliner and shadow for an updated, daytime-friendly effect. Notice how this combination looks almost neutral against a bright ensemble. Brilliant!
Sophisticated Updos at DVF
After seasons of messy buns, the sleek updo is alive and well thanks to Diane Von Furstenberg’s vision of a strong, confident woman. To get the tight, pulled back style, apply gel to freshly blown out hair for shine, secure into a low ponytail, then twist into a bun and secure with bobby pins. Simple and stunning.
