This summer's most promising romantic comedy has a little bit of fantasy in it, and perhaps introduces indie darling Zoe Kazan as the latest Manic Pixie Dream Girl. The catch--and hopefully the saving grace--is that Zoe not only wrote the film, but stars in it as the quirky, messy girl of the protagonist's dreams. And if her interview with Vulture in which she rails against the MPDG stereotype is any indication, she's definitely aware of the territory her film gets into. We're hoping her performance will be more of a commentary on the MPDG trope, rather than a crutch. But regardless, the trailer promises sweet summertime entertainment--not a bad way to escape the heat or spend a date night. Just don't be surprised if the chemistry between Kazan and co-star Paul Dano (a real life couple) makes your own love life pale in comparison. Remember, your boyfriend can't control you with his typerwriter, so that should be a plus.
Calvin, played by Paul Dano, is a young novelist struggling with his writing, and presumably his love life, until he begins to write about the girl of his dreams, who he names Ruby Sparks. The breakthrough not only solves his writer's block, but gets him a new girlfriend, one whose actions and character he controls as he continues to write.
In celebration of the movie, hitting theaters on Wednesday, July 25, we're giving away Ruby Sparks-themed goodies to one of our Facebook and Twitter followers!
The prize pack includes a beach bag, towel, notebook, and ruby red nail polish.
