When her father died, Demi Lovato was very open about the relationship she had with her father. Although it was often a bumpy one, she still recognizes that he was her father and that he wasn't a bad person. Wanting to find a way to keep his spirit alive, Lovato has teamed up with a nonprofit organization and started "The Lovato Treatment Scholarship" dedicated to proving services to people with mental illness. "My dad suffered from mental illnesses, he was suffering so bad that he couldn't function in society normally and he couldn't get the help that he needed," says Lovatoa. "So when he passed away, I thought to myself, 'I wish there was something I could have done.'" The organization also hits close to home for Lovato as she has admitted to struggling with bulimia and biploar disorder in the past.
