There are very few things in life I consider a necessity aside from my iPod, my Netflix membership, and a regular sushi and burrito fix (not at the same time, of course). But I’ve found a new obsession to add to that list: Bella Pelle’s Chiara Body Polish.

I have keratosis pilaris (KP), a skin condition that affects over half the adult population. Most people don’t know they have KP because they’ve never officially been diagnosed by a dermatologist and therefore don’t identify with the name. KP occurs most commonly on the back of the upper arms in the way of small, red bumps that look like goose pimples. The bumps are an excess of keratin which (as I understand it) prevents your skin from regenerating as often as it should, leaving you with rough, dry, and bumpy skin. Unfortunately for me, I have KP all over my body. So I’ve spent most of my life and a small fortune trying products that promise to make my skin softer and smoother, all without luck.

The Chiara Body Polish is different. First of all, the beads that actually do the exfoliating are larger than other body scrubs I’ve used. I like this because it feels like it’s actually doing the nasty job of exfoliating, unlike the measly little beads in other scrubs I’ve used (which are probably perfectly fine for the un-KP population). The beads are so powerful that I’ve actually used them to slough down rough spots on my feet, something I was never able to do with other scrubs. It also contains salicylic acid, which has been shown to be somewhat effective in calming the effects of KP by helping your skin to regenerate more often.

After just a few days of using it (combined with a good body lotion), my skin felt different. The bumps are still there, but they’ve gone down a little—they’re less…bumpy, a little smoother. And, miracle of miracles, my skin is actually soft (as soft as it can be with the KP bumps), something I’ve never really experienced before.
