If you are like me, and have been putting off making your will or living trust and have a partner equally as unmotivated, then I highly recommend the CD-Rom: “Suze Orman’s Will & Trust Kit.” Frankly, this female financial power-house gets on my nerves a bit since Orman seems to be everywhere: from infomercial programs on TV to books, DVDs and now, clearly, CD-Roms. But, I was desperate. Living in London and constantly getting on planes, trains and subways, and living through two bomb scares and one plane ride that almost had a crash landing, I thought all the signs were telling me to get started. I picked Suze Orman’s CD-Rom because I do like her easy-to-understand explanations for financial planning. I wasn’t disappointed with the simple instructions and clear explanations found in her will & trust kit. I spent one entire day creating my will, revocable trust and advanced directive and durable power of attorney for health care. I hadn’t planned to spend the whole day, but in the end, it was a wise decision. So just plan to spend a Saturday or Sunday going through this, as you’ll need to make lists of what additional items you may want to grant to specific family members for your will, and you may find yourself spending an hour or two on just that task.
She also helps you draft a letter to your chosen guardian and/or executor of your will and helps you go through questions that will help you decide who would be best suited for these roles.
What I liked most is that this CD-Rom breaks everything down simply and walks you through the process step-by-step. At times, it seems a bit slow. But when you rush ahead, as I did, I found that I needed to go back for clarity’s sake, and that is quite easy to do. Another nice feature is that this CD-Rom is created both for those who like books and those who prefer TV format—so you can choose to have someone read you through each step at an excruciatingly slow pace, or you can opt to turn off the voice and flip through the documents you need.

Yeah, she works on my nerves too. I don't mean to sound harsh, but unfortunately, you can only test the validity of the documents you've created with one of two methods: 1. Pay the bucks to have a lawyer review it. 2. Wait until you've gone from this world and watch what $19.99 actually gets you (from the other side of the veil, if you will). As a financial planner who has seen a number of messy estate proceedings, I'd suggest the former. Sorry, there are really no shortcuts to this one!
