Our friend Joel was first to hear the report that plastic baby bottles may not be safe. They may leach chemicals into the milk, and a study on this subject recently released its findings. (Read about it on DC here.) I had been thinking of switching to glass bottles anyway. When I tried to call the makers of Dr. Browns bottles a few weeks earlier, their Web site was down and their customer service number led me straight to an inoperable voice mailbox. Not exactly confidence boosting!
I ordered Evenflo glass baby bottles from Naturalbaby.Com. They were backordered for several weeks because of the news report, and the customer service rep was very honest about the anticipated wait time. By the time they arrived, my pediatrician has put in her two cents that Dr. Browns bottles were fine. I remained unconvinced. Better safe than sorry. I washed the glass bottles and started using them right away.
At first, I was afraid my baby would get too much gas from them. I was used to a brand known for preventing gas. But my baby didn't seem to care a bit. She sucked down her formula no problem. The only downside is that she cannot hold the glass bottle by herself. It's too heavy for her four-month-old hands.
I'm going to order another six-pack, which costs $14.95. I may have to wait a while, but I've decided glass bottles are worth it for the peace of mind.
