Okay, you got me. It’s made of cardboard and technically not, well, alive. But if you’re hesitant to get a living bonsai, which—let’s face it—is a pain in the neck, this cardboard bonsai tree is a fun alternative. It comes in a puzzle-like kit, allowing you to arrange the branches and growths however you like. Mine has entertained many a houseguest, does not tempt my cats to eat it, and has survived several apartment moves with aplomb.
Pros: No soil, pot, watering, or light needed.
Cons: No one will be wowed by your gardening skills.
Where to buy: wishingfish.com, chocosho.com, giantrobot.com.
What I paid: $16
