I know I’m not the only parent out there who has been driven to the brink of insanity by the constant droning of your child’s favorite music may it be ”The Wheels on the Bus,” “Skip to my Lou,” or “Old MacDonald.” So in service to my fellow sufferers I have to share about a wonderful CD, “For the Kids.”
A Co-worker told me about it when we were commiserating about having to listen to the same kids’ music over and over again. What really peaked my interest was when she said that she found herself singing along to the different songs because she liked them not because they were playing endlessly in her head. Compiled of songs performed and sometimes written by various well-known artists such as Sarah McLaughlin, Cake, the Bare-naked Ladies and Five for Fighting, a portion of the proceeds goes to the VH1 Save the Music foundation to help restore music in public schools.
Some of the songs are new renditions of old classic kids songs like the Muppets “The Rainbow Connection” beautifully done by Sarah McLaughlin. Then there are pieces specifically written for this CD such as “The Hoppity Song” done by Five for Fighting and “Wonderwheel” by Dan Zanes, ex-member of Del Fuego. The songs are catchy and in some cases really rockin’—(take a listen to “Snow Day!”).
My favorite song is probably “The Hoppity Song” because it’s just so fun and catchy. I’ve caught my son, Elijah, on more than one occasion, dancing in his playpen, and saying “Hi!” when prompted with the line, “Everybody say Hi!” All of the songs whether new renditions of old favorites or new songs written for this project are truly “kids” songs with themes like the alphabet, staying clean, and being afraid of the dark, etc. Apparently there have been two follow-up CD’s as well, “For the Kids II” and “For the Kids III.” I can’t wait to get them ... for Elijah of course!
