Listening to Children, a seven booklet set by Patty Wipfler

OK, these little booklets saved my life. Seriously. The wealth of information and support packed into these slim volumes amazed me. Though I have to admit it took me a year to read them, a paragraph at a time, hidden away in the bathroom, while I was attempting to find a moment’s respite from parenting an extremely expressive and challenging toddler.

Patty Wipfler wrote these booklets for parents and caregivers, to explain in down-to-earth terms what children want and need from the people who love them. 400,000 or so booklets later, I am happy to attest she met her goal. In language that is at once comforting and encouraging these booklets discuss why children express their feelings so fully, and how to help them with their difficulties.

You'll learn how your child's mind works, and how listening to your child allows the two of you to work together to relieve you child's fears, frustrations, and anger. Winner of the NAPPA Gold award in 2006. The seven booklet set includes: How Children’s Emotions Work, Special Time, Playlistening, Crying, Tantrums and Indignation, Healing Children's Fears, and Reaching For Your Angry Child.

Don’t miss these small treasures. They should be available in parent’s bathrooms the world over.

I read these booklets just in time help my then 10-year-old wade through some big life changes. Along with a two-month separation from her mama, she suddenly found herself a big sister to a very active five year old. And she was scared to death about middle school coming up. My sweet 12-year-old is now on top of the world thanks to Patty Wipfler's parenting wisdom.
