I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I walked into the theater to see Mamma Mia, but I was blown away. While Meryl Streep's singing voice didn't move mountains, her performance (as well as the performances of her two sidekicks, played by Christine Baranski and Julie Walters) was stellar.
The dance numbers were awesome (my personal favorite involves a large group of men in snorkling flippers on a dock), and those songs will be stuck in your head for a week after you see the film.
The best part of the movie was Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried. She was the most vocally talented of anyone in the film, and her energy brings the character to life.
While the guys in the film aren't the focus, Sky (Dominic Cooper), Bill (Stellan Skarsgard), Sam (Pierce Brosnan), and Harry (Colin Firth) delivered great performances. Sky's singing stood apart from the rest (and he wasn't bad to look at, either!) The other three held their own during group numbers, but unfortunately Pierce Brosnan's singing just didn't measure up. His duet with Meryl Streep actually had me cringing a bit.
Overall, the film is fast-moving, funny, well-choreographed, and extremely engaging. Despite a few weak spots, Mamma Mia is solid and enjoyable.
