First hand experience is the best. If you've got an opinion about anything from a salad dressing to a Caribbean resort, we want to hear it.

My sister and I went to Mamma Mia last week. I enjoy Abba music, I'm a huge musical theatre fan and I LOVE Meryl Streep so I expected to enjoy it. And I did. The movie is fluff, but its fun fluff. It's one of those movies where you (okay, I) get teary watching the dance numbers because you (okay, I) know they had so much fun making it!

I did have one beef with it though.

Pierce Brosnan.

Yes, he's an okay actor. Yes, he's yummy to look at. But NO! He can't sing!

The other 2 guys weren't much better, but they didn't sing as much nor were we expected to take them as seriously.

But Pierce was the romantic lead--we needed to believe him. And hell yeah, he looked the part, but then he'd open his mouth to sing and it all went out the window. Not only can he not sing, but he also gets that serious singer face. You know the one--wrinkled forehead, intense look in the eyes--I just wanted to tell him to relax.

Now I don't just have this complaint with Mamma Mia. Being a musical theatre buff (okay, snob!) it drives me crazy when people are cast in movies or theatre for their name and not their talent. (Ashley Simpson in Chicago, Drew Lachey in Rent, David Hasselhoff in the Producers--the list goes on and on.) I know that everyone is out for the almighty buck, but c'mon. How many people actually went to Mamma Mia for Pierce Brosnan? We went for the Abba songs and Meryl Streep. So you can't tell me there wasn't some other hunky man out there who could have played Pierce's part and actually been able to SING IT!

(Hmmmm, a singer in a musical. What an odd concept.)

Having said all of that, I really did enjoy the movie and do recommend it. Just be prepared to giggle a little every time Mr. Brosnan has to sing!!
