Halima, named for a medicine woman, is a member of the Zaghawa tribe of Darfur. This chilling memoir tells the story of a girl who grew into womanhood during a time of great prejudice and political strife. Halima does become a medical doctor, but is gravely punished for her choice. Just when she had healed from her own rape and torture, her village was attacked. Her father was killed, and her family scattered. After a long struggle, Halima managed to be granted asylum in London. Her story proves that things weren’t always as they are now in Darfur, and that our reality can be changed in a minute.
