The Best Medicine (Part 2)

I found a quote that I really like: “You are as young as your faith, as old as your fear and as long as your heart receives messages of beauty, cheer, courage, grandeur, and power—from the earth, from man and from the infinite—so long will you stay ageless.” It is especially meaningful to me for I’m there now. I was recently diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, and massive blood clots in both legs. I found myself walking a proverbial fine line when they did a blood transfusion to remove the coumadin from my brain, and took me off of it altogether. Well, my legs still need to be treated. I had to ditch my pain pills as they stopped working and I wanted to do it while I still could. My friend Larry and I found some pain remedies at the health food store here in Waikiki. So far, they seem to be helping.

This story has very special meaning to me. I began playing pool from my wheelchair. Hey, I shoot pretty good. The guys whom I play with invite me to play, despite the wheelchair, and they are very good supportive friends, of which I am blessed with many here in town. I recently moved back to Waikiki and it feels so good to be around them again. I really do have a lot of love and support. One of my friends whom I play pool with
spent some time with me yesterday talking to me about how not to think negative, and staying positive. He also really cares. What he said made so much sense. “If I think that I have an aneurysm, I’ll get another.” It’s true. I got more blood circles. Like, if you think “Oh, I got a parking ticket.” Well, guess what. You’ll get another parking ticket. I found this new information very exciting. I think I should have known this already at my age, fifty-seven, but, sometimes it just takes special circumstances. Better late than never, I always say.

My friend, AJ, is always asking me how I get through everything. She was almost in tears yesterday as I try to stand for a shot at pool that simply requires me standing. She sensed how hard I was trying. I’m a very spirited person. That’s all I could say. I’m always enjoying the treats and blessings along the way. They make me grow stronger. This hasn’t been an easy journey. But, as that quote up there says, my heart is receiving messages of beauty, cheer, courage, grandeur, and power.
