21 Things I've Learned This Year

It's barely September, a little early to be wrapping up the year and making resolutions. But set foot inside any retail establishment, and you're bombarded with Back-to-School, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas at once. Nothing like shopping for school supplies while ghosts hover nearby over cornucopias overflowing with candy canes. Honestly, it's gotten a little ridiculous. But it's also got me thinking that while the retailers may be pushing it, time really is flying. And it's been a hell of a year. For you too I'm sure. We can all look back and say we've been through a lot, so this list isn't about the specific obstacles I've overcome or the pleasantries I've enjoyed. It's about the things I've learned from the mistakes I've made and the victories I've achieved, things I probably knew, but that needed reinforcement, things that you probably know too, but repetition breeds success, right? So if you haven't done these things or learned these lessons yet, don't worry. There's always next year, which if we're going by Hallmark time, should be here in about six months.

1. Listen to your best friend. She's probably right. No. She's definitely right.

2. Do something that scares the hell out of you. It will make you feel invincible.

3. Remember what you loved most as a child. Then go out and do it. Right now.

4. Running away doesn't cure anything. Except insomnia. Run long enough and you'll get tired.

5. Someone who truly loves you will never make you feel inferior. Ever.

6. Reconnect with someone you lost. But only if your intentions are selfless. It's not all about you.

7. Re-read your favorite book. The best books never get old.

8. Contradictions don't exist. Check your premises.

9. Laugh until you cry. Cry until you have no tears left. You'll feel better.

10. Very few things are beyond repair. How hard do you want to work to fix it?

11. You can be the boss. You can be a friend. You cannot be your friend's boss or your boss's friend.

12. Write it down. Shred it. Burn it. Publish it. Whatever. Just get it out of your system.

13. Make a bucket list. Then start crossing things off. What are you waiting for?

14. Apologize. But only if you really mean it.

15. Understand you only ever know part of the story. And sometimes even that is fiction.

16. Listen. If you really want to learn something, just listen.

17. Silence is a coward's way of inflicting pain. Speak the truth.

18. Don't be too proud to ask for help. Drowning solves nothing.

19. Fall down. Get up. Repeat. This is how you learn to keep going even when it hurts.

20. Confidence is not the same as arrogance. Only the former is attractive.

21. If you cannot change it you must learn to live with it. Acceptance or indifference. The choice is yours.
