After several cold and dreary weekends spent at our getaway in North Florida, I took advantage of a spring-like Sunday morning and took my Bible and devotional book out on the patio for my own little private Sunday “service.” After I had done some reading and reflecting, my husband came out and turned on the radio while he did some chores in the back yard.
The deejay’s theme of the morning was songs with city names in the titles. I heard songs about Galveston, Memphis, Montgomery, and even the fictional “Margaritaville.” As the tropical “Margaritaville” melody wafted through the air, I tried earnestly to continue reading about the biblical city of Jerusalem, however, being a beach lover, Buffett’s song turned my thoughts to sandy shores, palm trees and azure waters.
It took some time and effort, and the fact that Buffett’s ode to a laid-back beach community existence actually ended, but I was able to return to my focus and continue my Sunday study.
Just as the song did me during my Bible-study time, life can turn us away from our goal to stay centered on God and his plan and purpose for us. It is certain that difficulties will come but sometimes even pleasant sounding “melodies” can distract us and lead us on an alternate excursion away from God’s direction.
Strive to stay centered on Him whether the distraction be a positive or negative one. Keep your mind and heart focused and let him take the lead!
Blessings!
