A Chakra Tutorial: What Do They Do?

Picture hundreds of little vortexes of color spinning around in your body, processing information from the environment around you and transforming it into your own personal supply of mental, physical, and spiritual energy. This is how chakras function, at least according to believers. They maintain that each chakra, which means “wheel” in Sanskrit, has a particular role within the body and that there are several chakra centers located along the spine that govern everything from emotional well-being to physical stamina. It’s said that imbalances in these main chakras are to blame for all kinds of maladies, including depression and sleep disorders. Fortunately, learning about the function of each chakra center also reveals what you can do to bring balance—and positive energy—back.

Muladhara (First/Root Chakra)

Location: Base of spine

Associated color: Red

Function: The Root chakra affects confidence and trust. When it picks up on negative outside cues and shifts out of balance, the result can be depression, fatigue, low body temperature, and anemia.

Need a chakra boost? Bring the color red into your life through diet, decoration, and clothes. Get plenty of sleep and daily exercise.
