Creating an Intentional Life Plan in 2010

I stopped setting goals quite a few years ago. These days, I set an intention for my year, combined with action plans. I create vision boards, and I structure my time in such a way to make space for what I need to do. It is fun (really), it helps me focus my energy, and I am always surprised by what happens!

I have found that there are a three really important attitudes that are necessary to creating and implementing a successful life plan. In no particular order, here they are:

1. Have a firm (and compassionate) grasp on where you are starting out.
This is done with fresh eyes and a beginner’s mind. By being present with who you are, in this moment, you are much more able to assess the best next step. After all, intentional life planning is about narrowing the gap between where we are and where we would like to be, right? We can’t do that if we are unwilling to accept where we are.

2. Be willing to do what it takes.

If you have an intention and you know what you need to do to make it happen, you simply must have to willingness to do what it takes. If you know that you aren’t very organized, then learn about time management or have someone help you create stress-free structures. If you need accountability, join a mastermind group or hire a coach (I am great at helping people with this stuff). Play to your strengths, know your weakness, and make it happen.

3. Let go of the outcome.

This is the grand paradox of planning, isn’t it? Though we set a course, often, life has other things in mind. Therefore, it is important to be able to hold our plans lightly and be adaptable. When we are moving in a direction that is in line with who we are at the deepest, most authentic level of being, it is easier to let go of outcomes. Why? Because we are enjoying the process.
