Today my ostomy supplies arrived. I was so excited to get them, I can’t believe it. While ostomy bags may now become a permanent part of my life, I won’t have to have any kind of surgery to make them that way. I simply use them to collect the waste and preserve the surrounding skin.
I was without bags over the holidays, and needless to say, I was not happy about it. I had to go back to using gauze pads, surgical dressings, and tape. My skin itched so bad I wanted to cry, but I didn’t. I toughed it out, and made do for a couple of days.
Now that I am wearing a bag again, my skin no longer itches and I am feeling more like a normal individual. If you don’t suffer from a fistula, or have to wear an ostomy bag, you probably have no idea what I’m talking about. The trick to wearing the bag is to make sure it doesn’t leak, so getting a tight seal is very important.
Now I can get back to living my life and enjoying being human again!
