Meditate & Feel Better About Your Body and Yourself

I’m a nutritionist, media psychologist, wellness coach and mom (phew!). I’ve worked with hundreds of women in the areas of health, wellbeing and body image. I am conducting an exciting and potentially paradigm shifting study for my PhD dissertation in psychology. The study utilizes meditation to help women feel better about their bodies and themselves.

I am currently recruiting adult women of all ages and backgrounds to participate. Here’s what participants can expect. You will be asked to listen to a 20-minute podcast once per day for three weeks or be assigned to a wait-list control group. The wait-list control group will receive the podcasts at the completion of the study. Before and after the study you will be asked to fill out survey questions regarding how you feel about yourself and your body. The questions will help ascertain if the meditation podcasts have a positive effect on your personal body image and self esteem. All information is completely confidential and you’ll remain anonymous per the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) protocols. In addition, all participants will be entered in a drawing to win one of five American Express gift cards (one $100 and four $25)

Fighting negative body image in modern, media saturated America is an up hill battle for us all. You tell yourself you look and feel great, but then you’re bombarded by images of perfection that you (and most normal women), can’t live up to without a scalpel and enough botox to wipe out Bulgaria. And there goes all that hard-earned self-esteem, plummeting like a Vermont thermometer in January.

While we often can’t, and shouldn’t, change our bodies, we can train our minds to reject the images and ideas the media monster feeds us that cause suffering and self-loathing. Instead of reacting emotionally to media images, we need to recognize them for what they are, propaganda. Meditation can help you become aware of how you feel when something or someone, including yourself, triggers negative emotions.

I will go into more detail on how meditation, and other mind relaxation and enhancement techniques, can help you protect your self-esteem and stop the male dominated mass media from imposing their standard for the “ideal female body” on us in future posts. Your participation in this study is a wonderful first step for you that will benefit all women. It’s time to take back our bodies, and our minds, from those who manipulate our fears and false insecurities for profit.
