Life bustles by… work, responsibilities, worries and disappointments all tend to make us forget that life truly is precious. When was the last time you took a moment to be still—to take in the beauty of a moment or take stock of the things we take for granted because we don’t really see?
On a trip to the mountains I experienced one of these true moments of being still. It was fall and the colors were spectacular. I drove all up through Smokey Mountains National Park, stopping at outlooks to take pictures; it was exhilarating! I stood at one place where it was quiet—no one was around except myself and my friend. The view was breathtaking and as I stood there a feeling came over me that I cannot explain—it was humbling and overwhelming … my chest began to swell and tears began to spill down my cheeks uncontrollably. I had the feeling of inner peace and of being one with nature. I could hear the birds and smell the fresh air, feel the breeze as it fluttered through my hair but nothing else—no cars, no people … just a stillness, an appreciation of life.
I carried this peace for me for weeks and yearned to experience it again. No, I cannot return to the mountains each time I need this stillness but have discovered it comes in many forms and each form its own unique experience. Be it come when I look into the face of my granddaughters and see their happy smiles or hear their innocent laughter; sitting with my eyes closed and really listening to a beautiful song; standing and watching a sunrise or sunset; spending a moment remembering a loved one who has passed on; watching the rain and feeling it rejuvenate the earth or just taking in a deep breathe on a cool evening and appreciating just being alive.
Today’s world can be stressful and hectic and I too am guilty of forgetting just how precious life really is. When you are feeling pressures or disappointments ask yourself what tomorrow may bring and know these moments will pass. We are given but a short time upon this earth, find things that make you happy and pursue them. And above all, take the time to stop and be still—experience … appreciate … feel …
