Why Is Eating Healthy So Expensive?

Today is day two of keeping track of every dollar that I spend. I actually made it through yesterday without spending any money at all. Today I needed groceries so I had no choice but to head to the supermarket. I’ve never been great about clipping coupons but since I’ve been laid off I figured I better start. I went to various online sites looking for coupons for products that I normally use. My strategy was not to print out any coupons for products that I wouldn’t ordinarily use if I didn’t have a coupon. I didn’t have any problem finding coupons for things like paper products but finding coupons for food was an entirely different issue.

I guess you could call me a fitness fanatic. I weight train five days a week and eat a very clean diet. I normally buy organic fruit and vegetables along with fresh fish, chicken breast, egg beaters, and oatmeal. It seems like most of the coupons I found were for processed foods that I don’t eat. Why does eating healthy have to cost so much more money? One sweet red pepper costs $2.00 but you can a box of macaroni and cheese for next to nothing. In the summer, I grow herbs and vegetables in my garden, but this is February and I live in Michigan so obviously I won’t be raiding my own garden any time soon.

I did my best at the supermarket, but my attempt at coupon clipping was rather disappointing. Oh well, I do live near a lake … maybe I’ll take up ice fishing!
