Winter 2010

My garden is over a 3 years old now. It continues to take shape. I bought a couple of loads of soil the first spring and arranged it in mounds or made raised beds. This has helped me make a barrier hedge across the front of the house and an interesting mound for plants that like well-drained soil. These also makes the property look less flat.
My yard was used a hundred years ago as part of the Erie Canal system. The mule track that pulled the barges is the worst part of the clay hard pan for me. Or so I have been told. What the reality has proven to be? I live on the water marsh that was "filled in" to build the housing development by a Mr. Gray in the 1960's When it rains a lot I float and the sump pump works all the time.
I was thrilled to see early blooms scattered around the in the new soil. The fall-planted pussy willow trees delighted me with their small pussies shining silver against a blue spring sky. Little blue squill and Tete a Tete daffodils surprised me. I forgot I'd planted them. I love this spring that seems so long in coming when the winters last for 5 months.
Not long now before the lawn begins to bloom with a succession of meadow flowers... beginning with my favorite violets.

----------------------------

Written in Fall 2008:
This in the springtime of this year I moved from the mountains of NC to Central NY state where we are getting 3 or 4 inches of snow today, the last day of 2008.
I have gardened in different places in the US for many years, Iowa was the very best soil, and now I am creating a garden on soil that at its best is sand and gravel/rock fill and the worst is hardpan, river bottom fill clay -- the worst I have ever seen. A gardening challenge which I just sent a comment about to Divine Caroline gardeners under Dirt and Clay.
