DivineCaroline's unique interaction between reader & writer, even writer & writer is an absolutely new experience for me; and it feels wonderful!
I am finding out that it also serves as the spark of "divine" inspiration to "jell" the musings and thoughts of a lifetime into some type of coherent whole. My first story just flowed out of a sharing at a local book-reading by a Viet-Nam Army Chaplain/ Photographer/ Author. The beauty and humanity of his pictures, and his meditative style freed up my own positive army experiences to emerge out of the wreckage war leaves.
The latest of six articles was much more difficult for me. For weeks I researched, reread old books and new, revised & revised, & mercilessly cut favorite phrases, whole paragraphs: anything extraneous. I let it all simmer on a back burner of my brain like "Grandmother's Potluck Soup." Finally after many re-writings, I chose my "picture worth a thousand words," covered my eyes, and clicked on "submit."
Then "the earth moved under my feet." Although I'd submitted "my baby" for publication after supper hour, there it was the very next morn at the top of a Body & Soul index page on illness. I clicked happily into the "My Publicist" page & shared the announcement with my "usual e-mail buddies." As I wrote to these, other names & faces began to come to mind: families coping with serious illness at church, in my career and now more and more in my personal life. I dug out the Ann Arbor church directory I'd kept from my spouse's research sabbatical @ Univ. of Mich. about a decade ago. These people had nurtured and cared through my own cancer scare in my 30's. The little personal notes of thanks began to write themselves.Perhaps this article could be my heart-felt "Thank You." to each one of these "friends and Friends."
